The United Nations General Assembly Votes to Seat Turkey
Today, the United Nations General Assembly voted to seat the Republic of Turkey as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council for the term starting January 1, 2009, through 2010. Turkey, which is taking one of the seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group has not been a member of the U.N. Security Council since 1961. In only one round of voting where 192 countries participated with the same number of valid ballots, 151 cast their votes in favor of Turkey. This overwhelming vote by the international community recognizes Turkey’s strong and dedicated contributions across the wide spectrum of U.N. humanitarian and peacekeeping activities and its role as a critical catalyst of cooperation among its regional neighbors and beyond and as a nation that is committed to the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said of the vote:
